Electricity export to India: How much profit do Nepal make?
Kathmandu, October 10: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has made public a report that Nepal has become an electricity exporting country and has exported electricity worth seven billion 546 million one hundred thousand rupees to India within two months of the current fiscal year, Saun and Bhadau.
Until now, the NEA has not made public how much net profit did it earn from electricity exports to India! Experts create doubt that the NEA is exporting electricity below the rate that it procures from private-sector electricity-producing companies.
Economic observers say that Nepal has fallen into the Indian trap by exporting electricity to India. Tomorrow, if India announces that it will not import electricity from Nepal, where will Nepal sell its extra electricity? Therefore, economic observers are advocating for supplying electricity to local industries at subsidized prices, which could bring an industrial revolution in Nepal and transform the country into an industrial nation. Rather than providing electricity to India at a loss, it would be better for the nation if supplied electricity to the industries, they argue.
