Government fails to rescue flood victims, rebuild roads

By Our Reporter

The government has failed to rescue the people trapped in the floods and landslides and reopen the blocked roads.

When the Nakkhu incident made a mockery of the government for its utter negligence in saving the lives of people trapped in floods, the government also took days to rescue the passengers stranded on the BP Highway after the key road to connect Kathmandu was destroyed at various locations.

Many of the poor passengers walked to Kathmandu risking their life. The photographs showing women carrying babies and men with heavy bags on the back walking in the difficult terrain of  Kavre showed how the government was not prompt in helping people.

The worst scenario was at Jhyaplekhola landslide where no one reached in time to save the passengers buried by an immense landslide just near Kathmandu.

Still, many vehicles are left on the BP Highway and the government has not succeeded in opening the road even four days after it was blocked. It is Dashain time and many people are preparing to return home to celebrate the festival with family members, but the government has been too slow to open the blocked roads.

As most of the exit roads from the Kathmandu Valley have been blocked, there could be a shortage of essential items including food and fuel during the festival time. Therefore, the government should focus on opening the blocked roads as soon as possible.
